The search for a new police chief in Dalton, Ga., has broadened, according to a news release.

Police spokesman Bruce Frazier said the Dalton Public Safety Commission has extended the deadline for applications and opened the job to outside candidates.

He said the decision to open the job to external candidates came after concerns were expressed about a lack of diversity among the agency's qualified internal candidates. The new application deadline is Feb. 15.

The city requires a sworn police officer with at least 12 years of law enforcement experience showing increasing responsibility, supervision and rank progression in a municipal or similar agency. A bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field is required and a master's degree is preferred. Candidates must be U.S. citizens. The minimum starting salary is $90,000.

To apply, submit a letter of interest along with a completed application and resume and a written summary of skills, qualifications, experience, and education that would qualify for the position of police chief.

A full posting for the job requirements and an application can be found online at www.cityofdalton-ga.gov.
