A former Monroe County, Tenn., has been charged with official misconduct after an investigation found he had sexual contact with a jail inmate and brought a contraband cellphone into the jail.
The charges against Austin Benton Byrum, 55, followed an investigation that began in August 2016, according to a news release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Byrum was a captain at the sheriff's office at the time.
The release said investigators with the 10th Judicial District also worked on the case.
Byrum was indicted June 6 on charges of official misconduct; sexual contact with an inmate and introducing a contraband communication device into the jail.
He was booked into the Monroe County Jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond, the TBI release states.
