This week's dam destination: Fontana Dam

Along the Tennessee River and its many rushing tributaries, dams provide flood control, river navigation and hydropower - as well as ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Many of these sites boast beaches, overlooks, hiking trails, fishing piers and more.

This summer, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, we'll be showcasing some of the state's most action-packed dams. All within a day's drive and fun for the whole family, these destinations are sure to be a dam good time.

FONTANA DAM

This gorgeous dam is the highest dam east of the Rockies. The Appalachian Trail runs across the dam reservation, which offers a shelter with hot showers and is known to hikers as the "Fontana Hilton."
