Area Sports Notes: Dalton State's Lee wins NAIA golf title; team second

Dalton State College's S.M. Lee lived in the 60s all four days of the NAIA men's golf tournament at Silvis, Illinois. As a result, he was the medalist by eight strokes at TPC Deere Run with a final-round 69 capping a 272 total that led the second-ranked Roadrunners to a second-place finish behind No. 1 Oklahoma City University. OCU shot 1,127 to 1,140 for DSC, with Texas Wesleyan at 1,141, Coastal Georgia at 1,142 and Keiser fifth at 1,144 out of 29 teams. DSC's Chase Cole tied for 33rd at 291 with Ben Rebne at 293 and P.J. Shields and Dalton Johnson at 294. Rebne shot a 70 Friday, Johnson a 72, Shields a 73 and Cole a 74. Lee, the 2017 NAIA Jack Nicklaus Award winner and a 2018 finalist, joins Sean Elliott in 2015 as Roadrunners who have won the NAIA men's individual title.

Fishing

' Harrison resident Jacob Wheeler used a "hodge-podge" of "tactics, lures and locations" to catch 18 pounds, 3 ounces of bass Friday and take the lead at 35-7 in the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest on Lake Travis. First-day leader Ray Hanselman Jr. of Del Rio, Texas, was second at 34-1. Spring City's John Murray at 21-12 and Wesley Strader at 18-15 were 46th and 74th. "I used most of the (18) rods I had out, and I caught fish from 6 inches of water to 40 feet and I hit a bunch of spots," Wheeler said in a B.A.S.S. release.

' Andy Morgan of Dayton eased up to seventh Friday in the second day of the FLW Tour bass tournament on Kentucky Lake. He caught 15 pounds, 1 ounce for a total of 32-15, and Michael Neal of Dayton was 25th at 29-4 after a 19-4 haul. Randy Haynes of Ripley, Mississippi, led at 46-2. Chattanooga's Steven Klasing and Hixson's Mark Guhne finished 23rd and 30th among the co-anglers with 15-11 and 14-10.

Track & Field

' Thirteen Lee University track and field athletes were honored this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for all-region achievements in 25 events in 2018. All-region status went to the top five finishers in individual events and the top three teams in relays. Lee's Josiah Brooks was all-region in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the triple jump and the 4x400 relay with his twin Justin, Derek Flatford and Harold Smith, while Justin Brooks also was all-region in the 200 and 400 and Smith made it in the 800. Caleb Eagleson was all-region in the 5000 and 10000 runs, and Thomas Kelton made it in the 3000 steeplechase. The Flames had the region's best times in the 4x400, the 400 and the steeplechase. For the Lady Flames, Audrey Smith was all-region in the 1500, the steeplechase, the 5k and the 10k, and Charlee Boxall joined her in the 1500 and steeplechase and Emily Buwalda also made it in the 1500 and added the 800. Amy Carpenter and Logan Hernandez gave Lee three of the five 10k honorees, and Hannah Buttolph in the high jump and Camilla Sims in the discus throw also were all-region.

Soccer

' Tyner Academy center midfielder Cynthia Venzor has received athletic and academic scholarships to continue her soccer career at Tennessee Wesleyan University, which won the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament and two games in the NAIA women's national tournament last fall. The Lady Bulldogs finished 15-5-2. "Cynthia was our leading goal scorer on the season. Hustle and heart is her game," Tyner coach Randy Young said.

Tennis

' The Tennessee Wesleyan men's tennis team edged San Diego Christian 5-4 and lost 5-0 to No. 1 seed Georgia Gwinnett this week in the NAIA national tournament in Mobile, Alabama. The Bulldogs wound up 12-5. The deciding match against San Diego Christian was Federico Staksrud's 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles. Caio Bardauil, Bernat Paredes and Fabricio Tormen won in straight sets at the bottom of the TWU lineup, after Staksrud and Borja Perez won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
