Area sports notes: Chattanooga cyclist Durward Higgins sweeps again at national championship

Chattanooga's Durward Higgins earned a second consecutive three-discipline sweep at the USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals this past weekend in Augusta, Georgia. Competing in the 75-79 age group, he was first in the criterium Sunday - 10 seconds ahead of his division's runner-up - after already winning the age group's time trial and road race.

College athletics

* Tennessee Wesleyan University won the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's all-sports trophy for the third time in four years and finished second to men's winner Reinhardt in the overall Duard Walker Trophy standings for men's and women's sports. TWU competes in nine of the 10 AAC women's sports and won league championships in the 2017-18 school year in soccer and outdoor track and field. The Athens school had won the men's all-sports title the previous three years and the overall trophy five of the past six. In other recent TWU news, Sam Roberts was honored as NAIA South Region men's track and field head coach of the year by the sport's national coaching association. His Bulldogs finished second in the AAC outdoor meet and 15th in the nationals, with eight All-American performances.
