Burlington, through a partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, recently surprised Hardy Elementary with a donation of $10,000 to help teachers purchase classroom supplies.

On average, teachers spend about $600 of their own money on classroom materials each year, according to AdoptAClassroom.org, an organization dedicated to helping teachers provide what their students need without instructors having to use funds out of their own pockets.

The check was presented at a school assembly by Burlington representatives, much to the surprise of students and teachers.

"It was a huge surprise and shock," said Principal Robin Bambrey. "We are over-the-moon excited about this gift that has been given to our teachers and our students."

The money will be put toward each classroom, with teachers collaborating to decide what they need to benefit their grade level and individual classroom. In addition to supplies, teachers will also begin compiling classroom libraries that contain books of interest for each grade, a much-longed-for project that the teaching staff is very excited to get underway.

"I think the fact that the teachers will be able to use the money to get even more for their classroom to enhance the learning and engagement is such a great opportunity," Bambrey said.

Burlington made the donation in conjunction with the opening of its new Chattanooga store, located in the Waterside development near Hamilton Place mall.
