When Brent Rooker of the Chattanooga Lookouts stepped to the plate with two out in the seventh inning, the designated hitter was looking to reverse a Monday night that contained a lineout, a flyout and a 6-4-3 double play.
Reverse it he did, as Rooker doubled to left field to score Tanner English and LaMonte Wade to give the Lookouts a 5-2 lead in their eventual 6-2 victory over the Tennessee Smokies before an announced crowd of 4,450 at AT&T Field. The win gave first-place Chattanooga an 11-2 record in May and a 24-14 record overall.
Monday's game was played in a crisp two hours and 13 minutes.
Edgar Corcino put the Lookouts up 1-0 by opening the second inning with a home run to right. Tennessee (20-17) went up 2-1 on Trey Martin's two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, but Chattanooga answered later in the fifth with a two-run homer to right-center by Wade.
Omar Bencomo picked up the pitching win for the Lookouts, allowing five hits and two runs in six innings while striking out six. Bencomo improved to 3-0 with a 2.41 earned run average.
Wade went 2-for-3 to raise his season average to .300, while Nick Gordon went 2-for-4 to lift his average to .350.
